The beginning of karate Print E-mail
What is known today as Karate (Japanese: empty hand) originated on the island of Okinawa many centuries ago. The occupying Japanese banned the native Okinawa’s from carrying weapons so as to prevent any armed uprising. In response to this the Okinawa’s began secretly training in a method of unarmed combat that blended indigenous fighting techniques with the various styles of Chinese martial arts (collectively known as kung fu) that had been imported by merchants and explorers.

Over time the art evolved into a sophisticated fighting system and eventually was brought to Japan by Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan school teacher, who founded the Shotokan style of Karate and who is known generally today as "the father of modern karate". From there, the art of Karate has spread world-wide, with people being attracted to its spiritual and mental as well as its physical benefits.

Karate is not simply about fighting; anyone can train in street-fighting techniques and become a proficient fighter if one wishes. Training in Karate can change and refine a person, and help to foster mental qualities such as focus and calm awareness. A trained Karateka knows when to walk away from a fight but also how to react quickly and efficiently should the absolute necessity arise.
