Simon Coope Wado Ryu Karate SchoolsWe offer karate training following a traditional Wado-Ryu syllabus as developed by Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki and the W.I.K.F.
Wado Ryu is one of the major styles of traditional karatedo. It is recognised for its realistic techniques, which are performed in a natural, supple way. Evasion and simultaneous counterattack counter every attack by an opponent. Locks and throws succeed strikes, kicks and punches. All superfluous tension and movements are discarded, so that a minimum use of energy yields maximum effect. Therefore it is a good way of training both for fitness and self-defence. Especially because of the minimums of effort and strength needed to perform techniques it is a good system of defense for both for women and children.
Wado is a style that combines Okinawan karate and the jujitsu of the samurai. From the former are derived the large athletic techniques and kata's, from the latter the quick, very efficient attacks to vulnerable points, locks, throws and advanced body movements.
'Wado' means 'Way of harmony'. By choosing this name Sensei Ohtsuka (the originator of Wado Ryu) signalled that karatedo is more than a method of self-defence: it is a budo - an art by which its practitioners can develop themselves, both mentally and physically. |
